My name is Lorraine Thomas. I live in Mesa, Arizona and I'm a special education teacher. I came to Positive Changes Hypnosis because I was ready to lose weight. To date I've lost 30 pounds. I've dropped about three dress sizes from a size 16/18 to a slim size 10. My original goal when I came to Positive Changes was to lose twenty pounds even that felt like a stretch. Before I came to Positive Changes I had been struggling with my weight for close to forty years. I started gaining weight in my thirties when I got married and had a family and the stress of life caught up with me. I used food to comfort me when I was upset or stressed out. Thanks to Positive Changes I have learned that food is fuel for my body. I eat when I get hungry, but I don't use food to comfort myself the way I used to. Even if I see something that in the past I would have wanted to eat, now I know I can still have it but I no longer want to have it. It's a whole different set of feelings now.
I had tried many, many diets in the past. I did every fad diet that's ever come along. I tried a lot of things. Those diets work--as long as you stay on them. My problem was never losing weight. My problem was that something would happen along the way, usually before I got to whatever my goal weight was, and I would just start my unhealthy eating habits again and gain all the weight back. For a long time I had wanted to be healthier. I knew being overweight wasn't good for me. I wanted to feel better health wise and about my self-image. I had been reading Positive Changes ads in the newspaper for months. The thing that struck me most when reading the ads was that the stories were of people who had lost their weight a while ago and they had kept their weight off. A lot of them talked about how they had changed their relationship with food and I knew that's what I needed to do.
I used to feel controlled by food. It was an ongoing battle all the time. I don't think there was a day that went by that I didn't spend time thinking about food and what I was going to eat. I started losing weight within the first week I told myself I wasn't going to weigh myself every day which is something I normally would have done, but after the first week I got on the scale and I had lost six or seven pounds. After the first month I had dropped fifteen pounds. I felt great. As I said, my original goal was twenty pounds but by the end of the first week when I passed up the candy dish and I was no longer thinking about food constantly I realized that I could not only meet my goal but I could surpass my goal and it would be easy and natural. I have done something I never thought I could do. My weight loss has been really easy. I just didn't need to worry about food anymore. I am no longer ruled by food. That happened right away, practically from day one.
When I came to Positive Changes I wasn't looking for someone to tell me how to lose weight. I have lost weight and regained it more times than I can count. So I really wasn't looking for that. I was looking for a new relationship with food and a way that I could see food in a different light so I could change my life, not go on another "diet". I went into this with a positive attitude and I believed I could make it work. Positive Changes is different because I'm no longer focused on food. On most diets your focus is on food and following all the food rules of that diet. The change for me now is that I don't think about food very often. I can pass by food and it doesn't bother me. I used to spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about food and what food I'm going to buy and what food I could sample at the market or what dinner out I was going to eat. I felt like too much of my time was spent on my relationship with food and that's the biggest difference. That reliance on food in my life is gone.
My attitude about life in general has improved. I feel better about myself and I don't waste time thinking about food all the time. My self-esteem has improved. That's the biggest difference for me is when I walk in a room and I have a good sense of self and a good sense of feeling positive. I can concentrate on what's going on around me rather than hearing that little voice in my mind worrying about how I look to other people. Now I don't worry about what other people think because I'm confident with the way I look and how I feel. That makes all the difference in the world. I will say that my husband loves the changes in me. When he hugs me now his arms wrap all the way around me. He probably says more than anybody and compliments me more than anybody. He can really see the difference in me.
I just went for a job interview and didn't feel that uncomfortable feeling like they may judge my skills and abilities based on my weight. In this economy I couldn't let my weight hold me back, so going into the interview I felt a good sense of self and very positive that how I looked wouldn't stop me from getting the job. I could just concentrate on the job and the questions rather than having that little nagging thought in the back of my mind, "Oh my gosh, here's a fat lady." It's just so negative for the whole process. With this new confidence not only was it a better interview, I got the job!
It was a big decision but in the end I had the guarantee and everything was set up for success. The staff was very positive and supportive and they really wanted it to work as much as I did. I knew they would do whatever it took to help me reach my goal. I felt it was really worth it and it's been life changing for me. Hypnosis has helped me with a whole different way of looking at the world and looking at food and putting me back in control of my life. I have a better life now. Weight loss is nice but it's the entire package that really makes the difference. And the best part is I know that this time the changes I've made are permanent. I eat a well-balanced diet and these foods appeal to me more than the unhealthy foods in the past. I stop eating when I get full, which in the past I wouldn't have done. I've always been a fairly energetic person but I feel I have more energy now. I can do anything I want to do.
